If a pipe fills a tank in x hours, then it fills 1/x part of the tank in 1 hour.

The same holds true for emptying a tank.

If a pipe fills a tank in x hours and another pipe empties the tank in y hours, then the net part of the tank filled in 1 hour = 1/x – 1/y
