Ratio, Proportions & Mixtures – Quantitative Aptitude Notes

Ratio, Proportion & Mixture

Important Definitions

Ratio: The relation between two numbers with respect to each other.

Ratio Example: Suppose, the ratio of oranges to apples in a basket is 2:3. This means that for every 2 oranges, there are 3 apples in the basket.

Proportion: The equation between two ratios is called Proportion. If a:b = c:d, then a,b,c,d are said to be in proportion.

If a:b = c:d, then ad = bc

Mixture: A mixture is a combination of quantities of the same type.

Mixture example: A mixture of rice and wheat measured in kgs, A mixture of water and oil measured in millilitres.

Types of Proportions

  1. Directly Proportional
  2. Indirectly Proportional

If a/b = c/d, then a is said to be directly proportional to c and inversely proportional to d. Similarly, b is directly proportional to d and inversely proportional to c.
